Georgetown and Goodbye For Now

  • Day 7 of our Wild West Road Trip

Day seven is nearly over and the last full day of our summer vacation is drawing to a close. Although it was tempting to just chill out today, we wanted to see a few more things on our last day here in Colorado.

Although I always have good intentions of rising with the sun for alone time especially in such a beautiful location, I admittedly slept in with everyone else this morning! We had a slow start to our day but knew we didn’t have much on the agenda.

Our only destination today was Georgetown, the small town where we boarded the train yesterday. A former mining town, Georgetown today is a quaint village of shops, restaurants, and restored buildings which pay ode to the town’s rich historical past. We enjoyed walking around the downtown shops and had a wonderful late lunch at The Happy Cooker. After lunch, we drove around both Georgetown and neighboring Silver Plume before returning to Winter Park.

After we returned to the hotel, Trever left to take some pictures and the girls and I stayed behind and took full advantage of our few lazy hours on this last afternoon. I confess to doing one more load of laundry but otherwise I just relaxed and read in front of the open sliding door, a fan blowing in the cool mountain air as the sun and clouds vied for turns in the sky. I love my Arkansas home but the low humidity and mild summers here make me terribly envious of mountain Colorado summers!!

Trever and Abby made one last trip into town for some takeout and a few “road snacks” to get us though the loooonnggg ride home tomorrow. As we wind down this evening, I think we all feel that this has been a really good vacation. As with all family vacations, it has had it’s ups and downs but I feel like we have seen a lot of beautiful scenery and wildlife, learned some new things, and enjoyed our time together. Until next time Colorado…
