Today was a good day.

A good day to watch the rain from the dry warmth of the office,

The steady rhythm of the raindrops an accompaniment

To both work and some light housekeeping.

Today was a good day.

A good day to drive the long way through downtown,

Observing trees whose leaves have finally burst into brilliant colors,

Some taking the opportunity the rain brings to let those leaves go.

Today was a good day.

A good day to notice the local businesses decorating holiday windows,

Then drive past the fifty foot tall Christmas tree waiting to be illuminated,

And anticipate the season to come.

Today was a good day.

A good day to be a little more patient out and about in traffic and in the stores,

Knowing that everyone is a little damp and chilly,

And what’s the hurry anyway?

Today was a good day.

A good day to stop for a coffee on the way home,

The soundtrack of an audiobook about my favorite poet

Making the commute more downtime than drudgery.

Today was a good day.

A good day to make a simple dinner with simple foods,

Although I burned the sweet potatoes.

Again.

Today was a good day.

A good day to spend the evening crocheting Christmas trees,

Finally finding just the right pattern,

After many failed attempts.

Today was a good day.

A good day to remember that not every day will be a good day.

So I want to remember these ordinary things in this ordinary life,

And that today was a good day.
